Modern smartphones — iPhones, Android devices — contain a dedicated security chip called a Secure Enclave (Apple) or Trusted Execution Environment (Android). Verifying a P-256 signature on-chain cost roughly 50 times more gas than verifying a native secp256k1 signature — making it economically unviable for any real application.

The Fix: RIP-7212 and the P256VERIFY Precompile

The game changed with RIP-7212 (Rollup Improvement Proposal 7212), first proposed in June 2023 by Ulaş Erdoğan and Doğan Alpaslan. It is the first RIP to be successfully implemented across multiple Layer 2 networks.

RIP-7212 introduces a new precompiled contract — P256VERIFY — at address 0x100. A precompile is not a traditional smart contract; it is a native function built directly into the EVM client, optimized for performance and minimal gas consumption.

The numbers are stark:

Before RIP-7212: Verifying a P-256 signature on-chain cost approximately 50× more than verifying a native secp256k1 signature, making it practically unusable.
After RIP-7212: Verification costs just 3,450 gas — a 100× reduction from the best non-precompile approach.

This cost was benchmarked by comparing performance with ECRECOVER (the existing secp256k1 precompile at address 0x01). P-256 verification is roughly 15% slower than secp256k1 recovery, which is reflected in the 3,450 gas figure (versus 3,000 for ECRECOVER). The implementation follows the NIST FIPS 186-5 Digital Signature Standard, maximizing compatibility with the existing P-256 ecosystem.

Who Has Shipped It?

Adoption has been rapid across the L2 landscape:

Polygon PoS was the first network to ship RIP-7212 to mainnet, via the Napoli Hardfork.
Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova have adopted the proposal.
zkSync, Optimism, and Kakarot have committed to implementation.
Base is implementing RIP-7212 via the Fjord hardfork on the OP Stack, working in collaboration with Optimism.

The Security Architecture: Why Your Phone Is Now a Hardware Wallet

A common question: Is it actually safe to have a wallet on your phone without a seed phrase?

The answer is in the hardware.

The Secure Enclave (Apple) and Android Keystore are dedicated processors physically isolated from the main application processor. Cryptographic keys generated inside the Secure Enclave never leave it — not to the operating system, not to the application, not to the network. Even if your device is fully compromised by malware, the private key cannot be extracted.

For account recovery — the scenario where you lose your device — Smart Accounts support social recovery: designated guardian accounts (another wallet, a trusted contact, a hardware key) can authorize the transfer of ownership to a new device. This replaces "your funds are gone forever" with a recoverable process, without re-introducing a seed phrase.

EIP-7702: The Ecosystem Is Still Accelerating

It's worth noting that the account abstraction ecosystem did not stop at ERC-4337. In May 2025, Ethereum's Pectra upgrade shipped EIP-7702, which allows existing EOAs to temporarily execute smart contract code by delegating to a contract address. This means users with legacy wallets can now access gasless transactions, batched operations, and session keys without migrating to a new address.

EIP-7702 is complementary to ERC-4337, not a replacement. For users starting fresh — which is the target audience for frfr.fun — ERC-4337 smart accounts remain the cleanest path.
